Massage New Zealand was formed to promote the ongoing development of massage in New Zealand. Following recognition of massage therapy as an effective and beneficial health care modality, access has become widespread. Since therapeutic massage is not presently regulated by the NZ government we felt it was important that the profession needed to have a self-regulating body – to ensure the highest standards and provide the best level of service and protection for the public and its members.
In New Zealand we have many schools teaching massage, with courses ranging from a six-month basic relaxation certificate to a three-year degree course, but there existed no national exam to give a standardized level of massage competency. The association has developed different levels of membership which recognise the varying degrees of knowledge and expertise of its members. To find more information on different levels of membership, please refer to the Membership section of the website.
The association also has a Code of Ethics, a complaints procedure for clients who may feel concerned or unhappy with treatment they have received, and a scope of practice for each membership level to ensure that members work within their level of expertise.

In our modern society, where stress-related disorders have a major contribution to health problem, massage can play a significant role in decreasing stress and encouraging wellbeing. Properly trained massage therapists can also effectively relieve pain and treat injuries.
If you have more questions about the benefits of massage, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section of the website.
We hope that you find our website informative. If you would like to know more about any aspect of therapeutic massage in New Zealand or about our Association, please contact our Administrative Secretary.

Southern Cross Medical Care Society has a “Wellbeing” health insurance policy which includes “Wellbeing Modules”. These ‘add-ons’ give more tailored health cover, and include a “Body Care” Module.
From 1 July 2008 this Module permits members to claim up to $400.00 per year for Remedial Massage Therapy. This is defined as massage deemed medically necessary and undertaken by a RMT.
