Levels of Membership

Remedial Massage Therapist

Holds a national (NZQA) Diploma/Degree or equivalent in therapeutic massage.
Has a theoretical knowledge base in Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and the Theory of Massage.
Must have completed a minimum of 30 supervised massage clinical hours during massage training or post graduation.

Requirements are:
(NZQA) Diploma/Degree or equivalent in Therapeutic Massage
A current First Aid Certificate including CPR (should include unit standards 6400, 6401 and 6402).
On going professional development – 80 points per two years (Professional Development Requirement )

Receive the Massage NZ magazine & mini email news
Are listed on the Massage NZ website and have access to the members’ area of the website
Receive an annual practicing certificate and a permanent Massage NZ Remedial Massage Therapist membership certificate.

Certified Massage Therapist

Has a theoretical knowledge base in Human Anatomy, Physiology and the Theory of Massage, and a practical massage competency.

Requirements are:
(NZQA) Certificate in Relaxation Massage or equivalent.
A current First Aid Certificate including CPR (should include unit standards 6400, 6401 and 6402).
On going professional development – 40 points per two years (Professional Development Requirements )

Associate Level of Membership

Completed massage training in the past which is not formally recognised as meeting the academic & practical competencies of Massage New Zealand. (These therapists may have been working for many years and may not have undertaken ongoing massage education).

Associate members
Cannot use the Massage NZ logo;
Do not have voting rights;
Receive the Massage NZ magazine & mini email news;
Are not listed on the Massage NZ website, but have access to the members’ area of the website.
No longer receive a yearly renewable practicing certificate, but instead receive an annual certificate of membership at Associate level.

Affiliate Level of Membership

This membership is for anyone who would like to receive the Massage NZ Magazine (e.g. training establishments; other associations; health related businesses). This level of membership is not available to individual therapists or massage businesses.

No requirements.

Student level of membership

Must be currently studying massage.
